Before getting started on your sports betting journey, it is crucial to understand the most basic and foundational sportsbook and sports betting terminology.
A moneyline bet is simply betting on a team to win the respective game. It is important to mention there are two types of moneylines: 2-way and 3-way. 2-way moneyline has two outcomes, a win or a loss. 3-way moneyline are for sports where ties can occur, for example soccer. Betting a 3-way moneyline on a team to win means if the game ends in a tie, you lose your bet. Betting a 2-way moneyline where the game ends in a tie will result in a push - you get your initial bet back.
If you are looking to hedge bets for promotion/bonus offers or with arbitrage, do not use 3-way moneyline as there is a chance to lose both bets if the game ends in a tie.
By betting the spread you are betting on a team to win by a certain amount. If team A has a spread of -10.5 and team B has a spread of +10.5, if you bet on team A you are hoping they win by 10.5 or more. If you bet on team B you're hoping they lose by less than 10.5 or better. Note that different sports may refer to this line differently. For example, in baseball this is typically referred to as the "Run Line", whereas in hockey this line is referred to as "Puck line".
Betting the total means you are betting on the game to have a certain amount of points, goals, etc depending on the sport.
